PUNK, ROCK, AND CHAOS: THE CROTCHES LIVE IN HAIFA

The Crotches

I’ve done it again, I went to a show where the lyrics went over my head. The Crotches returned to Israel for a show in Haifa, and I decided to see what all the fuss was about. What followed was a great night of punk rock!

Yes, it happened again. I went to a show in a language I don’t understand. But this time, it was by choice! Not just tagging along with my wife to see Aviv Geffen or Guy Mazig, but going solo to a gig at Syrup in Haifa. It’s a venue we’ve been to before, and I’m sure we’ll be back again.

THE CROTCHES

The Crotches are a garage punk band from Tel Aviv, formed in 2011 by three brothers with the last name Corach. In the Bible, the Corachs were an anarchist community who rebelled against Moses and his god. (Look at us, learning Bible trivia at a punk show!) These modern-day Corachs seem to be carrying on the tradition, only now, their rebellion comes in the form of raw, high-energy punk rock. But how does a Dutch guy end up at The Crotches show? Well, Instagram is a mysterious place to find all things odd. One day I came across this wedding official from Las Vegas called Hellvis. After seeing a bunch of his videos doing weddings, I saw the guy portraying Hellvis was in a band. Now, let’s not bore you, but it resulted in me driving to Haifa for the show of the band.

With a cult-following, The Crutches show was packed. No conflict, war or crisis has stopped this band from conquering Israel’s ears with proper rock. Although they moved to the US, they still frequently make their way over. With 2 albums and a bunch of EPs, there was enough material to pick from, something for their hour show. From the get-go, the band manages to intrigue and spark the interest. The music sounds killer, and they know how to play. The singer has a lot of charisma and brings an interesting vibe to the table. I can tell you what songs they played, but to be honest I got no idea. But check them out on YouTube, or any other music streamer, and perhaps you find yourself a new band which you most likely don’t understand.

Honestly, the atmosphere tonight was electric. A nicely packed crowd danced, moshed, and sang along to every song, and it reminded me of seeing the Trench Dogs years ago. The same chaos (in the best way possible), the same unfiltered energy. The Crotches tore the house down and left quite the impression. Sure, I had no clue what was being sung, aside from a few songs in English, but the energy alone was more than enough to pull me in.
