Dutch band DeWolff has been a household name in the Dutch music industry. Their mixture of blues, rock, soul, and psychedelic blends so well and brings a unique sound I just had to experience.
BLACK BOTTLE RIOT
Old-school blues rock is thriving in the Netherlands, and Black Bottle Riot delivered a set that felt both timeless and fresh. Their gritty sound carried the spirit of the genre, while their cowboy hat-clad look added a fun, Western-inspired edge to the performance.
Formed in 2008, the band has released three albums, with their fourth set to drop in just a few weeks. Though I hadn’t heard of them before this show, their music had the room slowly filling up and heads nodding in unison. Their set was packed with memorable riffs and infectious grooves, and a few tracks stood out as personal highlights: Sea of Lies, Backseat Boogie, and Soul in Exile. By the time they wrapped up, they’d earned themselves more than a few new fans. That includes me.
DEWOLFF
I love experiencing new music, and tonight was no exception. A former co-worker used to rave about a band called DeWolff, constantly telling me how amazing they are live and how, as a concert-goer, I should check them out. So, with nothing to lose, here we are. Aside from catching a few of their songs on the radio and at work, I didn’t know much going in. Cue my surprise when just three guys stepped on stage and delivered a thrilling spectacle that truly (blues) rocked my butt off.
Formed in Geleen, the Netherlands, Pablo van de Poel (guitar/vocals), Luka van de Poel (drums/vocals), and Robin Piso (Hammond/Wurlitzer) have carved out a distinctive place in music. Over the years, they have released several albums and gained a reputation for their high-energy live shows. Pablo is one hell of a guitarist who also sings with incredible power. Some of my personal highlights from the night were Big Talk, Tired of Loving You, and Outta Step & Ill at Ease.
I can absolutely see why there is so much buzz about this band. DeWolff is killer! Their impressive catalog of blues and rock songs is just the beginning. It is their onstage energy that truly sets them apart. It is almost hard to believe they are only a three-piece band, given the sheer volume and depth of their sound. The synergy between the members is incredible. They are so in tune with each other’s talents that it feels like they could play for hours without missing a beat.
Here’s hoping we get to see them live again soon. For now, though, we have kicked off 2019 in the best possible way.
