Every month, we take a look at a picture I once shot that I feel deserves a spotlight. This month, let’s have a look at what I call Dancing in the Rain.
WORLD SUPERBIKES ON ASSEN
Racing a motorcycle around the cathedral is something special. Since growing up, I assume that the feeling and sensation of putting the helmet on brings an inner moment of Zen to the rider.
Okay, here we go. Focus. Speed. I am speed. One winner, twenty-five losers.
That quote might be coming from an animated movie called Cars, I’m sure the sensation and feeling is the same to these gladiators on bikes. Racing a motorcycle asks for your full focus. Imagine racing a track with 25 of the world’s best motorcycle racers and not being on your sharpest. It would end in a race to forget! Now imagine racing the fastest bikes in the world on a soaking wet racetrack!
DANCING IN THE RAIN
The photograph Dancing in the Rain was taken in the incredible Geert Timmer Chicane. This chicane is the last corner of the track and never fails to disappoint. Just before Race 2 of the World Superbikes back in 2014 it started to poor down. I was soaked to the bone and extremely cold. However, it didn’t stop me from going to the media centre to warm up. I stayed in the GT corner and got a good spot to shoot the riders as they battle in the rain.
It was honestly worth it, as I shot the picture I posted today. Due to the semi translucent visors, you can even see the eyes in several of the riders helmets. I love this image, and I’m super proud of having the chance to shoot these images so close from the actual track action. Toni Ellias is being followed by Leon Haslam, Davide Giuliano and Marco Melandri.
